In today’s world of e-commerce, social media, and marketing chaos, every business is competing for new customers to help them grow. Nicole DeJoris, president of the Lombard, Illinois-based Pinnacle Packaging, says it’s better to get repeat business, and interactive packaging is a key part of that equation.

“Interactive packaging, together with the unboxing experience and right-sized packaging, can play a critical role in a business’s relationship management program and earning repeat business from current customers,” DeJoris said.

Interactive packaging, a form of connected packaging, is the most recent addition to consumer engagement techniques. As brands work tirelessly to be relevant and authentic, they look for ways to manage the most crucial of all relationships—the one with current customers—those who have purchased a good or service.

DeJoris explained that her clients can include various items on their packaging to engage customers and stay connected. Some of those include QR codes that, when scanned, can take customers to places such as a review form, a loyalty program, an event page, or a coupon to use on their next purchase. Dynamic QR codes are editable and can be changed to reflect new promotions, sales, or even a direct message to customers thanking them for their purchase.

QR codes, hashtags, and branding information can be included on shipping boxes, tapes used to seal shipping boxes, notecards included inside the box, stickers used to close tissue inside the box, or even on the tissue paper itself. All it takes is one scan or checking out a hashtag to get a message across that connects with customers.

According to ThinkImpact.com, customer retention (CR) significantly affects return on investment, with a 5% increase in CR resulting in a 25–29% increase in revenue and a 25-95% increase in profitability. In addition, they say, “It can cost 5-25 times more to acquire a new customer than to retain an existing one and repeat customers…spend an average of 67% more than new customers.”

The unboxing experience, DeJoris says, “reinforces that feeling by the consumer that the retailer is giving them their best, that they care about them.” For example, this could include luxury boxes with an elegant look and feel, coordinated tissue, or other inside packaging, which may include a handwritten note.

Right-size boxing, placing products within a box that fits well and isn’t too big, is also essential for CR, but probably won’t be noticed by a consumer unless it’s not done properly and products are bouncing around or broken.

DeJoris has noticed that the use of QR codes and other ways of building relationships has gone far beyond packaging and retail businesses. “I also see those things being done by the League of Women Voters and others in the not-for-profit space,” she said, adding, “Everyone is looking for easy and effective ways to stay connected.”
