Seniors are already rationing medications as Medicare open enrollment collides with up to 60% drug cost increases coming January
NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Pinnie, a physician-led care navigation company, today announced significant momentum in its care navigation and virtual care service. The company has fielded approximately 20,000 calls in six months and enrolled hundreds of older adults in ongoing care navigation. This week, Pinnie also launched Pinnie Direct, a free, AI-powered text line for health information, designed to help older adults and caregivers research questions about coverage, costs, and access to care with clear next steps.
The launch comes as new data highlights the complexity of Medicare. A recent survey found that while 89% of Medicare beneficiaries surveyed feel confident they understand their coverage, only 13% understand the definitions of Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and supplemental plans. Simultaneously, Medicare's Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration expires at the end of 2026, a deadline that will affect 23 million Medicare beneficiaries, some with increases of up to 60%, which can easily be over $500 per year for many.
"Medicare beneficiaries often have one real option right now: figure it out themselves or wait on hold with Medicare," said Dr. Ed Wu, Pinnie's co-founder. "The system wasn't designed for them. When they call their doctor, the office doesn't have answers. When they call Medicare, they wait or never hear back. Pinnie Direct changes the option set with near-instant answers that can identify actionable steps. This may be the difference between making an informed choice in October and medication gaps in January."
During its first week, Pinnie Direct fielded hundreds of conversations with older adults and caregivers, providing helpful information across coverage navigation and cost management. A stroke patient addressed an insurance-imposed physical therapy cap, a rural patient located a geriatrician at a major academic hospital, and a 65-year-old beneficiary received information about an enrollment deadline. One caller avoided a $400+ surprise medical bill after being directed to the correct appeals process, while another discovered a prescription coverage deadline within four weeks.
"We see people texting at midnight, before 6 a.m., during windows when they can't reach anyone on the phone," said Aashay Patel, Pinnie's co-founder. "Roughly half the texts we're getting come from caregivers texting on behalf of an older adult, such as adult children helping their parents or spouses coordinating care. We're also seeing people reach out who have accessibility needs, including folks who can't reliably use a phone but can text. The text modality opens doors we didn't expect."
Pinnie's growth accelerated through the summer, with call volume jumping 30-fold from April to August. Within six months of launch, the company has fielded about 20,000 calls from older adults and caregivers. The call data shows consistent use patterns, including one-quarter of Pinnie's patient calls addressing insurance coverage confusion and one-third of calls addressing medication costs and access.
"Enrollment season is chaotic for patients and their families," Wu added. "Coverage changes. Drug formularies change. Networks shift. We're positioned to help people navigate that chaos in real time, before coverage changes or costly mistakes."
