“Danielle and the Fight Colorectal Cancer team have a sense of duty to provide this magazine as a resource for others in the fight,” said Cecile Madonna, Graphic Designer, Postern, “and it gives me so much hope to know organizations like theirs are out there!”

Postern, a marketing and design agency, has been awarded by GDUSA for their design of Fight Colorectal Cancer’s publication, Beyond Blue. Fight Colorectal Cancer is a not-for-profit advocacy organization based in Alexandria, VA, and each year, it publishes Beyond Blue, a magazine curated for and by survivors of colorectal cancer.

In past years, Beyond Blue has been printed and distributed to survivors, caretakers, and doctors’ offices. However, due to the spread of COVID-19, the organization had to take the publication in a new direction. For everyone’s safety, it was transformed from a print publication to a digital one.

The publication was designed from a “digital first” perspective, keeping the end users in mind. As an online publication, the entire issue had to be easily shareable across social platforms, and it needed to be engaging to readers on a variety of devices. It had to look, act, and function in an entirely different format.

According to GDUSA, “Health and wellness is arguably the most important industry in the US, the epicenter of the national conversation, and an area in which graphic designers have a vital role to play in 2020. [This is] a unique opportunity to be recognized by clients, prospects and the community for design, advertising and marketing excellence.”

The finished piece is a bold digital publication with a strong message in an easily consumable, engaging design. Creating this digital issue was a great practice in staying flexible throughout the process and shifting design decisions as the state of our world around us changes. The team at Fight Colorectal Cancer has a strong desire to provide the most valuable information for patients and caregivers, and were quick to recognize the need for a virtual resource instead.

“Danielle and the Fight Colorectal Cancer team have a sense of duty to provide this magazine as a resource for others in the fight,” said Cecile Madonna, Graphic Designer, Postern, “and it gives me so much hope to know organizations like theirs are out there!”
