The new online tool allows consumers to calculate their monthly cost across nearly 100 prepaid cards based on how they intend to use the card, allowing a more informed choice.

The tool guides consumers through a three-step wizard, asking how they will use the card, and uses that information to calculate the costs of all prepaid cards.

More than 12 million Americans use prepaid cards. In some ways, prepaid cards are like credit cards or checking account debit cards. They're issued through the Mastercard, Visa, American Express or Discover networks and can be used for in-store or online purchases and to get cash at ATMs. But they are not associated with a checking account and do not require credit. Prepaid card users deposit, or "load", money on the card and are limited to spending that amount until they load more.
Among the nearly 100 prepaid cards available, they have one thing in common. They all charge fees. But there can be a huge difference in the amount charged among prepaid cards, according to Clark.
"Choosing the right prepaid card can mean saving hundreds of dollars each year. But the 'right' card depends on how you'll use it," said Clark. "Some cards charge for purchases; others charge monthly fees. Some offer free ATM withdrawals; others don't. In addition to calculating cost, the tool also allows users to filter the list of prepaid cards by features, like cards that offer bill pay or savings accounts or cards with a high balance limit.
