ORLANDO, Fla., July 25, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hawaii state law makers passed legislation in early May 2018 to ban two chemicals found in many popular brand sunscreens. The bill, SB 2571, says that oxybenzone and octinoxate, "have significant harmful impacts on Hawaii's marine environment and residing ecosystems." The bill focuses on keeping sunscreens that contain these chemicals off of store shelves. This new legislation opens up an interesting discussion in that if these two ingredients have a "harmful impact" on the environment, then what type of impact do they have on the human body after daily application?
The safety concerns of oxybenzone have been under scrutiny for quite some time due to many potential dangers associated with this ingredient. Oxybenzone, which is the active ingredient in chemical sunscreens, has shown in studies to negatively affect the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a network of glands in our body that produce hormones. Pregnant women are advised to stay away from products that impact estrogen levels.

In the fourth national report on human exposure to environmental chemicals, The Center for Disease Control found that approximately 97% of the people tested had oxybenzone present in their urine.
