Dr. Sánchez is among a team of biologists and neuroscientists in Madrid, Spain at Complutense University of Madrid who has been studying the effects of THC, a cannabis compound, on cancer tumors for over a decade. Her team has discovered that THC effectively kills tumors in both cultured cells and animal models.

In 2018, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 609,640 people will die from the disease, according to National Cancer Institute. American Cancer Society recognizes that THC can help with common side effects of cancer chemotherapy, such as pain and nausea, and says "certain cannabinoids may slow growth and reduce spread of some forms of cancer," according to information on the health organization's website.
