ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hobsons, the education technology leader and company behind Naviance, today announced Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland has selected the Naviance platform to improve college, career and life readiness for students across the district. The implementation of Naviance, which is used by 40 percent of U.S. high school students, comes as part of the district's initiative to establish college and career readiness benchmarks and improve access to resources for all students to prepare for life after graduation. The district has chosen to expand Naviance to all middle and high schools after a very successful pilot in the 2017-18 school year.
"We're excited that our students can begin using Naviance in middle school to explore potential careers and create a solid education plan. We want every student to have the tools to prepare for the next step after high school, whether they choose to attend a two- or four-year college, a technical school, join the military, or enter the workforce," said Dr. Leon Washington, Instructional Supervisor for the Office of Professional School Counselors at PGCPS.
"We successfully piloted Naviance last school year in a selected number of schools and received great feedback," said Dr. Gwendolyn Mason, Chief of Special Education and Student Services at PGCPS. "Naviance provides our students with access to a state of the art system for making informed choices and planning successful futures."
"We are proud to be working with Prince George's County Public Schools to improve access to the resources and information that will help students set and achieve post-secondary goals," said Monica Morrell, General Manager of Naviance. "We believe every student deserves a chance to succeed, in high school and beyond. With help from their families and schools, Naviance can guide students through the process of understanding their strengths and interests, matching those to career goals, and creating a plan for life after high school. We're excited to see their success."
PGCPS, located in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, is the nation's 25th largest school district, with 208 schools and centers serving more than 130,000 students. The district is nationally recognized for innovative programs and initiatives that provide students with unique learning opportunities. Naviance, which is used by more than 12,000 schools and districts in the United States, will allow PGCPS to build a college-going culture to ensure that all students are well-prepared for life after high school, and provide the tools to measure success by means of data on college application and acceptance rates, FAFSA completions, and more.
The district joins several large districts in the region to embrace Naviance as their college and career readiness solution. Others include District of Columbia Public Schools; Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax counties in Virginia; and Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties in Maryland. The solution is also used by large urban districts around the country, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Houston, Philadelphia, and Broward County, Fla.
Naviance provides information and resources that enable school counselors, teachers, students, and parents to engage in meaningful conversations about how to assess a student's options after high school. It also allows them to explore, apply to, and enroll in a postsecondary path that is a best fit for the student, based on education and career goals, learning style, and personal preferences regarding where and how they would like to continue their education. The platform arms students and their families with information on the true cost of a particular college, based on their own family income, and allows them to explore scholarship and financial aid opportunities.
