PRMA Center for Advanced Breast Reconstruction Joins BRAVE Coalition Foundation in Celebrating BRAVE Day, Educating and Advocating for Breast Cancer Reconstruction Rights
BRAVE (Breast Restoration AdVocacy Education) Day aims to educate individuals on their breast reconstruction options and rights after breast cancer.
SAN ANTONIO, March 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- March 21st is BRAVE (Breast Restoration AdVocacy Education) Day. This day serves as a reminder to educate women and men on their right to reconstruction after breast cancer treatment.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons only about 25% of patients facing breast cancer surgery are aware of the wide range of breast reconstruction options available to them. By providing evidence-based information on all reconstructive options—including the option of no reconstruction—patients can make informed decisions that best meet their personal needs.
The most commonly performed method of reconstruction uses implants, but implants are not the only choice. Advanced breast reconstruction options (like the DIEP flap) use the patient's own tissue to reconstruct a natural, warm, soft breast after mastectomy without the use of an implant. Breast prosthesis are also an option for patients choosing to delay reconstruction or choosing no reconstruction.
"When it comes to breast reconstruction, there is no standard 'right choice.' Every individual's needs are different and so are their reconstructive journeys. Our goal is to ensure each patient makes the right decision for them! We believe shared decision-making is the key to patients feeling confident in their breast reconstruction choices and results," shares Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo, board-certified plastic surgeon and President of PRMA. "Risks associated with all surgeries should be fully discussed, along with the expected recovery time. Equally important is that the patient shares their preferences, values, and any personal and family factors that can influence breast reconstruction choices. The physician and patient should then decide the best surgical plan together."
Patient should also know breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is covered by insurance. Thanks to the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), insurance must cover breast reconstruction surgery if the patient has had a mastectomy.
A BRAVE Day celebration will be hosted locally by the BRAVE Coalition (find information on this even HERE) and nationally at multiple locations across the United States.
