I immediately thought of him when brainstorming who to speak at out ASSP student chapter technical talks.

Shawn M. Galloway, President and COO of ProAct Safety, will speak virtually at Ohio University’s ASSP Technical Talk on October 1st. “Much has been written about the need for safety to be integrated into business thinking for safety to become the way of business and a core value rather than priority. Not enough attention is placed on the need for business practices to be integrated into safety thinking. Safety is not simple. It is more than rule-following, common-sense and paying attention. Safety is influenced by culture, systems, leadership styles, history, economy, locations, etc. With organizations of all sizes, industries and maturity of safety systems, performance and culture, one of the most significant differentiators of successful organizations in safety is the way safety is strategically managed. I look forward to sharing these concepts to help these future safety leaders become the most effective they can be and seen as strategic allies to the operational executives they support,” said Galloway.

Your Safety Needs a New Strategy
All EHS leaders desire to get more effort from their people, effort that results more from internal desire and less from external prompting. Strategic thinking can create value at just about every level of an organization, but people need a reason to believe in those things in which they invest their discretionary effort, especially in safety. If you influence hearts and minds, hands and feet will follow. Based on his book, “Inside Strategy: Value Creation from Within Your Organization,” Shawn Galloway will share how to take the greatest strategic thinking and focus it inside your organization to improve both safety performance and culture.

Adda Ashcraft, graduate student and president for the student section of ASSP, says, “Shawn was chosen because I was thoroughly impressed by the logical connections made between psychology and organizational culture. His talk on worker motivation at the FSL Conference this past summer helped me think outside the box for my internship project on safety culture. I immediately thought of him when brainstorming who to speak at out ASSP student chapter technical talks.”
