In Nassau County, the leading cause of death among people between the ages of 18 and 35 is drug overdose or poisoning.
"Many people who need treatment for addiction do not get it," said the Long Island Interventions spokesperson. "Statistics from a well-known addiction treatment center show that 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, but only about 10% get the treatment they need." The spokesperson also mentioned that mental health conditions can complicate addiction, and they further highlight the need for treatment. "In many cases, an underlying and unmanaged mental health issue may be what leads a person to misuse drugs or alcohol," said the spokesperson. "Those individuals need treatment for both the addiction and the underlying mental health issue to stay in recovery and see improvements in their quality of life." Mental health care needs have also increased since the start of the pandemic.
A Household Pulse Survey showed that 25% of adults in New York had depression symptoms and 30% had anxiety symptoms at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. According to research from the National Institutes of Health, about 50% of people who have mental health disorders will develop a substance use disorder as well. The Long Island Interventions representative said that interventions may not be right in all situations. However, the organization offers other planning and referral services for addiction treatment, such as detox, inpatient and outpatient programs.
