Lincoln County judge criticises state licensing features after court rejects viral trade allegations. Defendant sentenced to probation.
WINFIELD, Mo., Oct. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Frank & Juengel Law Group P.C. is pleased to announce its client Brenda Deutsch, a Winfield foster parent at the center of widely circulated but false claims that she traded a foster child for a monkey, has been sentenced to probation.
The case, which generated significant media attention because of the outlandish rumors surrounding it, has captured the public imagination. But Frank & Juengel Law Group P.C. quickly brought the stories surrounding it down to Earth. It was established the case was not about child abuse or monkeys, but about a caregiver who sent a child to temporarily stay with a friend in another state without checking the receiving household first. Deutsch entered a guilty plea of first-degree endangerment of a child on June 15, 2026, a Class D felony. Prosecutors then dismissed two felony charges of abuse or neglect of a child under a plea agreement.
At sentencing for the child endangerment charge, the prosecutor asked for Deutsch to be sentenced to 7 years in prison. Ultimately, she received three years of state-supervised probation.
Attorney Joseph W. Flees from the firm said the following:
"The international and national media were not kind to my client and described her as having traded a child for an animal, but the actual evidence clearly shows this did not happen. While Brenda experienced a lapse in judgement regarding the child's care, this was not a case where she should have to be sent to prison, and thankfully she wasn't."
