New self-paced educational resource helps parents and caregivers recognize grooming patterns, warning signs, sextortion and AI-enabled exploitation—and build practical safeguards for children's online lives.
HARLINGEN, Texas, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- ProtectTexasChildren.org today announced that registration is open for Digital Safeguard Training for Parents, an online, self-paced educational course designed to help adult parents and caregivers understand digital grooming, recognize warning signs and establish practical safeguards for children's online activities.
Digital grooming is a process through which a person seeking to exploit a child may gain access, build trust or secrecy, test boundaries and move toward manipulation or abuse. Those interactions can develop through social media, gaming environments, messaging applications and other digital spaces that are part of ordinary childhood. Because the early stages may appear harmless, adults may not recognize the pattern until the conduct has escalated.
The need for clear caregiver education is reflected in the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's 2025 CyberTipline Report. NCMEC received approximately 1.4 million reports concerning online enticement during 2025, including more than 80,000 reports concerning sextortion. NCMEC also reported that online enticement can occur across many types of platforms, including gaming, social media and messaging applications. These figures describe CyberTipline reports—not Texas-specific figures, adjudicated cases or counts of unique victims.
"Parents do not have to become technology experts to become better prepared," said Ricardo A. Barrera, the Texas attorney who developed the course. "They need a clear explanation of how grooming develops, which warning signs deserve attention and what calm, practical steps they can take before a situation escalates."
The course begins with an orientation and continues through eight self-paced modules. Its subjects include:
- how vulnerability and access can develop in ordinary digital environments;
- grooming stages and recurring behavioral patterns;
- risks involving gaming, social media, messaging and disappearing communications;
- warning signs and measured first-response considerations;
- practical household safeguards and a parent safety toolkit;
- sextortion, AI-enabled impersonation and deepfake exploitation; and
- development of a family digital-safety action plan.
The course uses short videos, knowledge checks, progress controls and a downloadable completion certificate. The certificate records completion through the course platform only. It is not a professional certification or an evaluation of parenting ability, legal compliance or the merits of any family matter.
The training is designed for adult parents and caregivers, including families navigating divorce, conservatorship disputes, child-protection matters, changes in caregivers or other periods of transition. The material describes these periods as possible "vulnerability windows"—times when disrupted routines, emotional uncertainty or inconsistent digital rules may make a child more receptive to unsafe attention. The course emphasizes parental presence, communication and coordinated household practices without treating family transition as parental failure or ordinary online activity as proof of misconduct.
Barrera's legal work includes family-law matters, child-protection concerns and preventive legal strategies. He developed the course after observing how quickly online risks can become intertwined with family conflict, transitions between households and inconsistent supervision. The course is intended to translate a complicated and changing subject into a structured educational sequence that adults can apply within their own families.
Digital Safeguard Training for Parents is supplemental adult education. It is not therapy, counseling, an evaluation, an investigation, forensic evidence, legal advice or an emergency-reporting service. It is not a substitute for any court-ordered service, including the parent-education course described by Texas Family Code § 105.009.
