Qosmos Announces Strategic Roadmap for SDN & NFV
Paris, France (PRWEB) March 04, 2014 -- Qosmos, the market leader in embedded Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and network intelligence technology for use in physical, virtualized and in SDN architectures, today announced a three-phase strategy for its SDN & NFV product portfolio.
The Qosmos strategy includes the following phases:
• Phase 1: Service Aware Module (SAM) for virtual switch
• Phase 2: DPI as a Virtual Network Function Component (VNFC)
• Phase 3: Service Chaining Module
These new products provide the built-in application intelligence required for service-awareness in SDN and NFV environments. Developers benefit from rapid time-to-market for solutions requiring built-in application intelligence, while telcos, datacenter operators, and enterprises profit from optimized network services and reduced infrastructure costs.
All products are based on Qosmos’ flagship product ixEngine®, which is already established as the de facto industry-standard DPI engine for developers of telecoms and enterprise solutions. Qosmos ixEngine® identifies and extracts information traveling over networks in real time, providing a true picture of the traffic by identifying protocols, types of application, and extracting additional information in the form of metadata. Equipment makers, telco and enterprise software vendors, and cloud service providers use Qosmos to gain application awareness, accelerate time to market and benefit from continuous signature updates.
Phase 1: Qosmos Service Aware Module (SAM) for Virtual Switch
Qosmos SAM™ can be combined with different industry vSwitches to provide detailed, real-time traffic intelligence and enable application-awareness at the infrastructure level. The new module classifies flows in the hypervisor and the resulting protocol information and metadata are either used directly by the virtual switch or passed on to guest applications.
In telecom environments, the Qosmos SAM for vSwitch can be used to build solutions optimizing service chaining in operator networks. The benefits for operators include savings due to consolidation of DPI technology and consistent application intelligence for all services. In data center environments, Qosmos SAMs placed in each host drastically improve the orchestrator’s ability to understand application traffic in real time and thereby to optimize VM placement: consolidate VMs with similar contexts onto a single host, anticipate needs for scaling, and improve quality of service with e.g. preventive redundancy.
As a first implementation, Qosmos SAM™ integrated with the Intel® DPDK vSwitch was demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2014. Qosmos SAM™ for vSwitch is available for pilot projects from Q1 2014 and will be commercially available from Q3 2014.
Phase 2: Qosmos Virtual DPI (VNFC)
Qosmos DPI as a VNFC complies with an official use case standardized by ETSI. This new Qosmos product runs in a virtual machine and uses an optimized interface to feed application information and metadata to other integrated components, together forming virtual networking equipment (VNFs) such as Service Routers, GGSN, PCEF, BRAS, ADC/Load Balancers, Network Analytics, NG Firewalls, WAN optimization, etc.
In a telecom environment, Qosmos DPI VNFC can optimize a virtual Evolved Packet Core, by feeding real-time traffic information to a virtual PDN-Gateway that can trigger multiple functions such as quality of service (QoS) management or traffic shaping. This means that operators can optimize costs through improved equipment utilization while securing service level agreements (SLAs) through dynamic and rapid instantiations.
The Qosmos DPI VNFC was shown at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2014, It will be available for pilot projects from Q2 2014, and commercially available from Q4 2014.
Phase 3: Qosmos Service Chaining Module
The Qosmos Service Chaining Module will leverage packet-tagging mechanisms and protocol extensions to convey application identification and metadata in real-time to applications and network functions. Thanks to this Qosmos middleware based on developing standards, software vendors will be able to provide solutions which dynamically optimize the number and the sequence of chained services, per type of network traffic. Service providers using solutions embedding the Qosmos Service Chaining Module will benefit from better resource utilization, dramatically improved ability to customize services and new possibilities for innovation.
The Qosmos Service Chaining Module will be available for pilot projects from H2 2014 and will be commercially available from H1 2015.
