Radon Water Testing: Expanded Advocacy for Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction
Radon in water usually originates in water wells that are drilled into bedrock containing radon gas. These wells could be private water wells or wells that are utilized by a public water supply system.
WATERLOO, Ill., Jan. 3, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction (CR3) announced that it will be adding continued radon awareness regarding well and water testing as part of their radon advocacy initiatives. Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction will be presenting ideas regarding ways in which property owners and concerned communities can engage in local advocacy with respect to radon testing. With the help of community organizations who are advocating not only for radon testing and mitigation, but also, health assessments, free CT Scans and physician awareness; the hope is that stronger health awareness will cause property owners to pay more attention to their health situation which might be affected by long-term exposure to contaminants. This third step is critical in preventing radon-related lung cancer. 'It's not enough to just test our homes", said Gloria Linnertz, Director of CR3, "with the up-swing in well contamination from contaminants due to fracking in states like Pennsylvania, we would be remiss if we did not implement a stronger and more complete radon testing education plan.

Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD, or "fracking") has the potential to impact water quality at many stages of the process. If water comes from a private well, property owners should be particularly aware of water quality issues. Private well water quality is not regulated in the United States, and well owners are responsible for performing their own monitoring. Regular monitoring is particularly important if the property is within three miles of UOGD activities.
