Read a Christian View on Mental Health Issues in To The Neck and Rising
Despite being a prevalent issue that affects millions of people worldwide, mental illness is still something that we have trouble talking about--Christians included. Author Richard White takes readers on a deeply personal, philosophical, and spiritual journey of self-reflection as he talks about depression and vulnerability in his new book To The Neck and Rising.
DALLAS, April 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Richard White's To The Neck and Rising is a biblical discussion on depression, a welcome view on a very controversial topic, especially in the 21st century. He opens up to the readers by calling out the toxic masculinity that exists in our society, which he says is a major factor in the increased number of suicides committed by men. He continues to emphasize throughout the book that learning how to express ourselves when we are overwhelmed with life's challenges can mean the difference between giving in to depression and seeking help in order to cope with it. A prominent figure when it comes to expressing our plight to the Lord, as said in this book, is King David, the author of the book of Psalms.
"This state of being overwhelmed is very real," the author says. "We can all identify with it. It is very much like waters that threaten to flow over the top and immerse you, concealing you from the outside world, drowning you. The threat to life and limb is very evident. The fact is that we seem to identify with it even if we have not personally experienced it first-hand."
Another eye-opening topic the author brings up is how society conditions the mindset that we can get what we want, when we want it. While it's good that we have dreams and aspirations that we work hard to achieve, many people forget that God has a plan for each of us that may not coincide with the timeline we set for ourselves. When we feel that we are falling behind on our schedule due to the "inconveniences" that get in the way, we lack the emotional capacity to manage or overcome them. We also tend to ask God for solutions to our problems as if He were on speed dial and supposed to give us fast responses and solutions every time.
Although they seem to be such insurmountable challenges, depression and mental illness are another means for us to see God at work and know that He is there for us. The author tells us that we must continue to seek the Lord even in the darkest of times when we feel the waters up to our neck continue to rise up. We must not passively assume that God will save us or wait for good things to happen, but must take proactive steps in the right direction as we search for Him with a sincere heart and an open mind.
When an obstacle gets in our way, we must take heart and let the experience encourage us to seek Him further. This is because after all is said and done, the desperation and emptiness we experience will be replaced with an indescribable peace that only God can give us. For those who sought Him, their mourning will be changed into joy.
"The promise is that when we see God at work, we will be glad. When God works in our lives, then there is lifting of our spirit within us and we cannot remain in the place of sadness, but rather we are lifted to the place of gladness. Desperation is replaced with a peace that only God can give."
