CHICAGO, Nov. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research & Education (R&E) Foundation awarded the 2018 Strategic Radiology/RSNA Research Seed Grant to Sina Tavakoli, M.D., Ph.D. This grant is made possible by Strategic Radiology's support of the RSNA R&E Foundation and is the first jointly named research seed grant with Strategic Radiology.
The Strategic Radiology/RSNA Research Seed Grant provides $40,000 for a one-year project to test hypotheses and obtain pilot data in preparation for major grant applications.
Sina Tavakoli, M.D., Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, will investigate the role of quantitative 18F-fluoroglutamine PET in non-invasive metabolic imaging of macrophages in atherosclerosis. If successful, this approach may help to characterize the immunometabolic features of atherosclerotic lesions and eventually lead to more accurate identification vulnerable plaques.
The RSNA R&E Foundation Board of Trustees approved funding for $4 million in radiology research and education grants this year, achieving a funding rate of 35 percent of grant applicants. "The R&E Foundation is grateful for Strategic Radiology's support of the 2018 grant recipients. This new partnership and commitment is a vital component in ensuring research innovation and seeding the future of radiology," said N. Reed Dunnick, M.D., chair of the R&E Foundation Board of Trustees.
"Strategic Radiology is honored to announce its inaugural seed grant in cooperation with the RSNA and in support of Dr. Tavakoli's exciting work," said Arl Van Moore Jr., M.D., FACR, FSIR, CEO and Chair, Strategic Radiology. "In helping to seed innovative clinical research, our community-based independent radiology practices stand with academia to invest in the future of our specialty."
