"As I grew into adulthood, I became very interested in genealogy; but no one was left alive to tell me about the Harvey's," said Harvey. "Like many people, I never asked my grandparents or parents to tell me our family's history. The only information I could find about my great grandfather was his name. My father took me somewhere around Beaufort, South Carolina, when I was very young. When he arrived at his destination, he told me, 'This is where your great grandfather was murdered.' Many years later, I thought this was just a dream. About 15 years ago, I asked my wife to accompany me to the Richland County Library in Columbia, South Carolina. I had read about the Family Research Center located there. After telling the librarian about my dream, she entered some information into her computer. Within minutes, she had found and printed an article published in the Beaufort Gazette (Beaufort, SC) newspaper dated August 30, 1906. My dream became a reality, and my days of serious research had begun."
James L. Harvey, Jr. is a native of Coosawhatchie, South Carolina. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from North Greenville University and the University of South Carolina. After 30 years of service, Harvey retired as a Regional Director with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. He enjoys reading and writing about American history. He and his wife, Charlotte, live in Lexington, South Carolina and have been married for 54 years. They have two adult children, four grandchildren and one miniature therapy poodle. They are members of Covenant Community Church (PCA), where Jim serves as an Elder Emeritus. He enjoys watching college football, baseball and basketball, and most importantly, praying for his church family and others in need.
