Lambert and his wife and enabler, Janet, resided on a small farm in Southeastern New Hampshire where they were surrounded by a cast of animal characters including Maggie a mixed dog and principal subject of the book, as well as her dog buddies Thatcher and Tucker, and Pete, the killer cat.

About the author
David F. Lambert was born in 1942 in Norwich, Connecticut. At the start of WWII, his father found work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the family moved to Kittery, Maine. At the war's end, they bought a small farm on Moulton Ridge Road in Kensington, New Hampshire. Except for enlistment in the Marine Corps after high school, Lambert did not leave Moulton Ridge Road for 70 years. And there, their constant visiting grandchild and companion Charlie Hoffman captured the true feeling of the farm and animals in the illustrations in FREE TO A GOOD HOME. David and Janet currently reside in Exeter, New Hampshire.
