Rev. James Hanvey, S.J., Presents Summer Lecture Series at USF
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 25, 2015 -- The University of San Francisco’s (USF) Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought is pleased to welcome back Rev. James Hanvey, S.J., as its 2015 Summer Scholar-in-Residence. Fr. Hanvey will present a three-part lecture series on contemporary Catholic theology. The lectures are free, open to the public, and will take place in the Handlery Room on USF’s Lone Mountain (2800 Turk Blvd. in San Francisco).

“Fr. James Hanvey, currently Rector at Campion Hall at Oxford University, has a keen sense of how the Catholic Church has been influenced by Europe,” said Mike Duffy, director of the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at USF. “As the Church celebrates the 50th anniversary of Vatican II, Fr. Hanvey is able to enflesh that European sense of what this anniversary means as we look to the future. He will also provide insights into how Pope Francis sees this anniversary and how Vatican II informs the Pope’s vision of the church as a church of the poor.”
Fr. Hanvey specializes in Catholic Social Thought, Ignatian Spirituality, and systematic theology, the organization of biblical teachings into individual doctrines of the Christian faith. He has lectured and written on education, health care, and the Church’s response to contemporary culture. He co-authored an influential report commissioned by the Catholic Education Service (England and Wales) entitled, On the Way to Life, which explored the challenges for Catholic education in secular post-modern culture.
Fr. Hanvey received his doctorate from Oxford University on the contemporary metaphysics of the doctrine of the Trinity, and has taught systematic theology at Heythrop College, University of London, where he also founded and directed the Heythrop Institute for Religion, Ethics, and Society in 2004. Fr. Hanvey has also been the theological consultant to the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales. He is currently working his forthcoming new book, “The Theological Foundations of Catholic Social Teaching - The Witness of the Spirit.”
In 2012, Fr. Hanvey served as the Anna and Joseph Lo Schiavo Chair in Catholic Social Thought, a joint appointment by the department of Theology and Religious Studies and the Lane Center to promote and advance Jesuit identity and ideals at USF.
