Services like Uber have gained rapid popularity in recent years, immediate access to goods and services has become the rule rather than the exception. It is a trend driven largely by changing customer expectations and enabled primarily via mobile technology. In addition to disrupting multiple industries and birthing several new business models, this has contributed greatly to the birth of something known as the gig economy.
"In today's job landscape, we're seeing a growing number of men and women who do freelance work, either on the side or as their primary source of income," explains Dave Allen, CEO of Rideshare Central. "Ridesharing is a big part of that. Since we're always looking to learn more about our industry, we sought to explore the relationship drivers across multiple services have with the gig economy - why they do it, what sort of services they provide, and so on."
The majority of respondents used Lyft and Uber, though DoorDash, Postmates, Instacart, and Etsy were also prominent platforms. Of those men and women, 40% used their gig as their primary source of income, with over 60% of respondents noting that they did not travel more than 30 minutes for their job. Only 25% work their gig 1-2 days a week, with nearly 35% working 6-7.
The majority of people with a side-gig are determined to work, as well - more than 50% work upwards of 10 gigs a week, and 75% decline only 1-3 tasks a week.
"As we expected, the main appeal of having a side hustle lies in the ability to make your own schedule, have flexibility in your workday, and have the freedom to work when and how you want," explains Allen. "Rude customers, low pay, time consumption, and inconvenient distances proved the biggest downsides to our respondents. Even so, the majority of them seem to gain a great deal of enjoyment and fulfillment from their gigs, whether as a side hustle or a freelance career."
