Robert Redford Will Speak at Colby College’s 194th Commencement Ceremony
Waterville, Maine (PRWEB) May 20, 2015 -- Robert Redford, the iconic independent filmmaker who founded the Sundance Film Festival, will deliver the commencement address at Colby’s 194th Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Redford, who was recently labeled the “Godfather of Indie Film” by TIME magazine, will also receive an honorary degree.
“Robert Redford represents with great honor and prestige so much of what we value at Colby,” said Colby President David A. Greene. “Throughout his distinguished career he has demonstrated a commitment to the open expression of ideas and the power of artful storytelling. We look forward to welcoming him to Colby and to hearing the insights he will provide to our graduating class.”
Greene will present bachelors’ degrees to seniors and honorary doctoral degrees to Redford and four other distinguished individuals: Deborah Bial, president and founder of the Posse Foundation; Andrew Davis ’85, arts, education, and environmental philanthropist; Roger W. Ferguson Jr., president and CEO of TIAA-CREF; and Jose Antonio Vargas, filmmaker, journalist and founder of Define American.
The class includes 48 members of Phi Beta Kappa, a Watson Fellow, a Goldwater Scholar, a Fulbright, and five Davis Projects for Peace grant winners. Sixty-three percent of graduating seniors studied abroad, two thirds presented their research findings at the Colby Liberal Arts Symposium April 30, and most did internships during Jan Plans and/or summers. Many will begin careers, while others will pursue graduate studies in medicine, nonprofit leadership, education, finance, law and other disciplines.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the Miller Library’s lawn and is open to the public. Those unable to attend may watch a live webcast on Colby’s website.
