Last month, Danny Shouhed, M.D., became the first surgeon in the country to perform a nearly "invisible" robotic sleeve gastrectomy at Providence Saint John's Health Center.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., July 19, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The sleeve gastrectomy is the most common bariatric procedure performed around the world. It involves resecting 70-80% of the stomach, leading to restriction, decreased hunger, and increased satiety through hormonal changes in the gut. The surgery is typically performed laparoscopically with 3-6 incisions that are seen across the abdomen. Dr. Shouhed has performed the procedure for a handful of select patients with three incisions hidden beneath the patient's waistline. Unlike a traditional robotic sleeve gastrectomy, where small incisions are made near a patient's belly button, this minimally invasive technique differs by placing incisions below the waistline, allowing the small scars to remain hidden from view when patients wear jeans or a bathing suit.
"It's similar to a C-section scar since they are so low. It gives patients an opportunity to keep their surgery confidential. A lot of patients don't want people to know they had bariatric surgery to lose weight, so this technique makes it possible for them to hide their procedure," said Dr. Shouhed.
With the more common techniques, micro-incisions near the abdomen can still be visible to the naked eye, and Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) – a procedure that creates a single, larger incision in the belly button – may lead to higher hernia and complication rates for patients.

Unfortunately, not every patient is a candidate for this procedure. Due to the limitations of the robotic instruments, the "invisible" procedure can only be performed on patients who are of average height and who are not extremely obese. This is because the tools may not safely reach the surgery site.
