California Colorectal Surgeons Use Robotic Surgery to Significantly Improve the Lives of Patients Nationwide
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) February 27, 2014 -- California Colorectal Surgeons (http://www.californiacolorectalsurgeons.com) a leading colorectal specialty practice in Los Angeles, is on the forefront of integrating the state-of-the-art robotic surgery system, called the da Vinci robot, into their surgical practice. In this minimally invasive procedure, the robot allows surgery to be performed utilizing miniaturized surgical instruments, which fit through 8mm incisions. This specialized practice has long been providing the most advanced treatments for patients with colon and rectal conditions with internationally recognized, highly skilled and compassionate surgeons including Beth Moore, MD, FACS, FASCRS, Mari Madsen, MD, FACS and David Magner, MD, all experts in robotic colorectal surgery.
Robotic surgery treats both benign and malignant colorectal diseases. It provides the surgeon with more precise control and increased visibility. With robot-assisted surgery surgeons now have 360 degree controlled dexterity versus the limitations of traditional, open surgery requiring large incisions for direct, manual access to the targeted anatomy. Greater range of motion and increased productivity by the surgeon during the actual procedure results in less blood loss and trauma on the body. Patients experience faster recovery times, less pain and scarring and quicker return of sexual function, bowel function and normal diet.
The biggest advantage of colorectal robotic surgery is operating in the pelvis. Even the finest surgeons are challenged by the operative field’s poor visibility and the difficulty of maneuverability. Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to get deeper into the pelvis with very complicated rectal cancers.
Dr. Beth Moore states, “The great thing about this technology is that it is state-of-the-art technology through very tiny incisions. There is minimal scarring, and there are minimal incisions involved. It also provides the surgeon with excellent 3-D, high definition vision so there is more precise removal of tumors. The surgeon can actually see the nerves for bowel function, sexual function so you avoid damaging those nerves. In addition, because it’s so minimally invasive, there's a quicker recovery for your diet and bowel function. There's also a shorter hospitalization and a quicker recovery back to work.”
Is the Robot Doing the Surgery?
The robot is not performing the procedure. At no time does the surgeon see a virtual image, or program the system to perform any independent maneuvers outside of the surgeon's direct, real-time control. The surgeon is the one controlling the arms of the robot and the tools that the robot is using remotely. Nothing can be done without the surgeon. The technology in the robot’s arms provides the surgeon with the ability to do exact calibrations with hand movements, which improves dexterity. Ultimately, this makes challenging, delicate movements during resections smooth and easy. Most importantly, robotic assisted surgery is extremely safe.
The robot includes advanced imaging technology featuring 3-D, high-definition cameras, with clearer vision and images during surgery, the ability to do close-ups via stereoscopic vision, and referencing that is instantaneous. The robot also allows for improved intraoperative decision-making with technology that evaluates the health of tissue and helps us determine the proper limits of our resection. The improved visual imaging and evaluation tools provide surgeons with more precision to better treat patients.
Since 1998, there have been more than 4,000 peer-reviewed publications have appeared in various clinical journals on the field of robotic surgery. Colorectal cancer affects nearly 1.3 million people worldwide each year and is the fourth most common cause of cancer death. With the excellent results being produced by California Colorectal Surgeons, robotic-assisted colorectal surgery is setting a new standard in treatment and dramatically improving the lives of patients.
About California Colorectal Surgeons
Pioneering the field of colorectal robotic surgery is California Colorectal Surgeons (CCS). All of CCS’s colorectal specialists are board or double-board certified in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. CCS is patient-focused and offers “state of the art” diagnosis, treatment and technology for the full spectrum of colorectal disorders including colon cancer, rectal cancer, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, fistula and defecation-related disorders. All of CCS’s surgeons are attending surgeons at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and actively participate in teaching and mentoring residents and fellows. CCS serves patients throughout the state of California, the United States and internationally.
