MEDINA, Minn., Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has introduced a new Bow Tie Inlay System, a series of templates that make it easier to create traditional bow-tie-shaped inlay keys, nested bow-tie keys and keys in a variety of other shapes with a plunge router. These keys often are used to add a decorative element to a project or to span a crack in a board to keep it from opening further.
"Whether you call them bow ties, butterfly keys or Dutchmen, inlay keys are a time-honored method for stabilizing cracks in a workpiece, as well as adding visual interest with a contrasting wood," said Dan Wenning, Rockler's senior director of product development. "With our new system, users can create the traditional shapes but also add striking design elements, whether they nest the bow tie shapes or create their own patterns with the other shapes."
The Bow Tie Inlay System includes four separate sets:
The Starter Kit with Frame, Bit and Bushing is the base for the rest of the sets. It includes two bow tie inlay templates that enable the user to rout different sizes of inlay keys or one inside the other with a consistent border all the way around. The 4" x 6" x 6mm thick acrylic templates fit in a centered opening in a 9" x 11" x 6mm thick acrylic frame that gets attached to the workpiece with double-sided tape. The frame and the templates all have screen-printed cross marks for alignment, and the frame fits all templates in the system. The included guide bushing with removable collar mounts to the plunge router and allows both the mortise and the matching inlay key to be routed with the included 1/8"-diameter (1/4" shank) solid carbide spiral up-cut router bit.
The Nested Template Set includes four templates for routing scaled sizes of bow ties that can be used individually or inlaid within each other.
The Specialty 1 Template Set and the Specialty 2 Template Set include templates for shapes that put a new spin on the traditional bow tie or butterfly key and provide additional design possibilities. The Specialty 1 set includes templates for routing an I-Beam, an X, a Concave End Bow Tie and a Convex End Bow Tie. The Specialty 2 set includes templates for routing a Chain Link shape, an Angled Bow Tie, a Butterfly Bow Tie and a Half Bow Tie. Multiples of the Chain Link shape can be joined to form a continuous chain, and the Half Bow Tie can be flipped to create what looks like a full bow tie with a center split along its length.
