For the second summer in a row, Roer's Zoofari opened its Wings of Wonder exhibit to visitors this month. The butterfly garden features more than 300 butterflies and three different species, giving visitors a unique chance to experience the spectacular species.
RESTON, Va., June 16, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- With summer vacation now in full swing, Roer's Zoofari is opening its Wings of Wonder exhibit this month, giving visitors an opportunity to view more than 300 magnificent butterflies and 50 types of plants. The butterfly garden exhibit, which debuted for the first-time last summer, is open daily from 10 am – 4 pm.
As visitors enter the garden, they will see three different species of butterflies: the eastern black swallowtail, the giant swallowtail, and the painted lady.
Eastern black swallowtails are known for their speed and flying closer to the ground than other swallowtails do. They are the most commonly found in a backyard, and typically live 10 to 12 days. However, under some circumstances, black swallowtails can live up to 35 or 40 days.
Giant swallowtails are one of the largest butterfly species in the U.S. These butterflies are black in color with yellow or orange spots on their wings. Most commonly found in North America, the giant swallowtail prefers to live in open, sunny fields and meadows. They are also most drawn to plants in the citrus family.
Painted lady butterflies can fly up to 30 miles per hour. Unlike other species of butterflies, the painted lady does not become dormant during the winter – instead, they migrate to warmer climates. The painted lady is found on every continent except Antarctica and South America.
"Roer's Zoofari is thrilled to welcome visitors back this summer to our Wings of Wonder exhibit this summer," said Roer's Zoofari CEO Vanessa Roer. "This is the perfect summer activity for all ages, and we look forward to seeing the awe on visitors' faces as they witness these incredible butterflies."
