Dr. Peter J. Millett Selected to Lecture on Rotator Cuff Repair at the 41st Annual Percivall Pott Scientific Meeting in London
Vail, Colorado (PRWEB) December 06, 2013 -- Peter J. Millett, MD, MSc, Director of Shoulder Surgery at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado was selected as a visiting orthopedic surgeon to lecture at the 41st Annual Percivall Pott Scientific Meeting in London, England. Named after Sir Percivall Pott, a pioneer in the field of orthopedics and surgery, the Pervicall Pott Society is among the most prestigious orthopedic training programs in the United Kingdom. Established in 1973, the Percivall Pott Scientific Meeting serves as a forum for thought leaders and trainees alike to exchange cutting-edge ideas in the field of orthopedic surgery.
Sir Percivall Pott, himself, for whom the lectureship was named, was a famous surgeon in the 1700’s and is credited with numerous surgical advances, developing many of the modern principles of surgery. Dr. Millett considers Pott a ‘giant’ in the field of surgery. “I still routinely use Pott's scissors in my practice today!” said Millett. Pott is also credited with being the first physician to connect environmental exposures with cancer – something we take for granted today but a real breakthrough at the time.
The meeting was held in the city of London at the historic St. Bartholomews (Bart’s) Hospital Great Hall – a famous Baroque style room decorated with a series of famous Hogarth murals from the 1700’s. St Barts is very famous and has been a continuous hospital since the early 1100’s. Dr. Millett lectured on “State of the Art in Rotator Cuff Repair”. As an orthopedic shoulder specialist at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, Dr. Millett is internationally recognized for his research in sports medicine and rotator cuff repair. “It was a great honor for me to share my thoughts on this topic, with my distinguished colleagues and friends from England, and at such a historic place," said Millett. "Having performed some of my training at the University of Cambridge, it was nice to come back to the United Kingdom and serve as a Percivall Pott's lecturer.”
Rotator cuff injuries are among the most common of all shoulder injuries. Dr. Millett has been studying rotator cuff injuries and their treatments for more than a decade and has helped develop less-invasive ways to improve outcomes and hasten recovery for patients who need rotator cuff repair.
In addition to his lecture, Dr. Millett spent time with the faculty and trainees at St Bart's and The Royal London Hospitals. Dr. Millett added, "Special thanks to Drs. Satish Kutty, Prem Achar, Nick Saw, David McKenna, and the faculty and trainees at St. Bart's and The Royal London for organizing such a wonderful meeting! This is yet another example of how the work we are doing in Vail at The Steadman Clinic, the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, and the Vail Valley Medical Center is having a global impact."
