Murrells Inlet, SC (PRWEB) July 29, 2014 -- The Snell Foundation updates their testing specifications every 5 years so the next round of specs will be 2015. When will SA2015 helmets be available? The transition to the Snell SA2015 standard will take place on October 1, 2015.
Changes for the Snell SA2015 standard require helmets must be ready for the addition of frontal restraint tether hardware such as used in HANS® and other systems as well as pass "low lateral" and "low impact" velocity testing.
In past experience, most manufacturers fall behind and do not have their new helmets in production by this time frame. If you have an SA2005 or SA2010 helmet, check with your sanctioning body to confirm their rules. In past years, most organizations relaxed their helmet spec rules by approximately 6 months in order for the manufacturers to catch up. So, it is possible your SA2005 helmet will be good through June or so of 2016. Time will tell.
If you can't wait until October 2015 or later for a new helmet, an SA2010 helmet will be good through 2020. The Snell foundation recommends replacing your helmet every five years so if you use your helmet a lot or don't take good care of it, it might be time to bite the bullet and get a replacement. You will still get plenty of use out of it. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it.
