SAE International's Mobility History Committee (MHC) to Exhibit at the The Henry Ford Old Car Festival, Sept 8 and 9 -2018
SAE International's Mobility History Committee (MHC) will have a presence at The Henry Ford Old Car Festival, Sept. 8-9. The exhibit is due in thanks for the advocacy of MHC activist Ruth Fruehauf and cooperation of The Henry Ford Events Team.
WARRENDALE, Pa., Sept. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- SAE International's Mobility History Committee (MHC) will have a presence at The Henry Ford Old Car Festival, Sept. 8-9. The exhibit is due in thanks for the advocacy of MHC activist Ruth Fruehauf and cooperation of The Henry Ford Events Team.
MHC's table will be placed among several vintage Fruehauf trailers: Ruth's Team includes famed Ford-restorer, Randy Shelton. They will exhibit 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
MHC will present material supporting SAE International's award-winning "A World in Motion" educational programs and other STEM initiatives. In addition, MHC will promote SAE membership and provide information on the SAE Foundation.
The Fruehauf Display includes the world's first semi-trailer, built by Detroit blacksmith, August Fruehauf in 1914. August coined the phrase "semi-trailer," when he converted a wagon into a trailer to haul a boat using a Model-T Ford. The Fruehauf Trailer company was founded four years later in 1918 and became the world's largest and most dominant manufacturer of semi-trailers for nearly a century.
The trailer on show is paired with a rare 1913 Smith Form-A semi-truck adapted from a Model-T Ford. Model-T's were used for many commercial applications, including postal delivery, hearses, snowmobiles and many other uses.

The MHC's main annual event is SAE WCX: World Congress Experience (formerly SAE World Congress) at Cobo Hall in Detroit. At the April 2018 WCX, the MHC display focused on the "History of the Future", featuring nine (9) historic vehicles, whose innovations paved the journey towards today's Autonomous Vehicles. The WCX 2019 "History of the Future" exhibit will be built around the theme of "Powering the Cars of Tomorrow".
MHC in 2018 participated at the Chrysler Employees Motorsport Assn. on June 9, the Eyes on Design show at the Grosse Pointe Ford Estate June 17th and The Concours d'Elegance of America in Plymouth, Mich., July 28-29.
All SAE Sections support SAE Student Chapters at local Universities , whose members volunteer at schools helping teachers apply SAE's award-winning "A World in Motion" educational programs for K-12 students.

The Henry Ford Old Car Festival, Sept 8-9, is the longest-running antique car show in America, held in the place where the history of the American automobile not only is passionately preserved but comes to life every day. The parade of vehicles from 1900's to the Great Depression epitomize the unbridled optimism of the American Dream, powered by electric, steam and gasoline. For 2018, Old Car Festival celebrates a century of factory-built pick-up trucks. Ford Motor Company introduced its Model TT – essentially a Model T with a heftier frame and drivetrain – in 1917. Ford built only three trucks that first year, but more than 40,000 TTs left the factory the following year. Chevrolet entered the truck market in 1918, selling its first half-ton and one-ton models. Truck production wasn't the only milestone for the bowtie brand that year. After losing control of General Motors in 1910, William C. Durant founded Chevrolet to rebuild his fortune – and regain GM. Chevy's runaway success made it possible. Restored to power, Durant formally merged Chevrolet into the General Motors family in 1918. Billy Durant was ousted again in 1920, but Chevrolet thrived as GM's best-selling brand – a position it still holds today.
