TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The City of Tampa recently served as the host location of the 2019 Medal of Honor Convention and SAGICO was on hand to honor these heroes. Tampa welcomed these most-highly decorated USA heroes as the National Hockey League (NHL), The Tampa Bay Lightning, military leaders, veteran organizations and community leaders honored these distinguished service members.

The Medal of Honor, the USA military's highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which is bestowed upon an individual. The award is generally presented to the recipient by the President of the United States in the name of Congress. Dating back to the Civil War, the Congressional Medal of Honor was created when President Abraham Lincoln affixed his signature to a US Congressional resolution in 1862. With this simple, and at the time rather obscure act, an inimitable award was created that would achieve prominence in American history like no other.

The 2019 convention in Tampa was the largest gathering of Medal of Honor (MOH) recipients in nearly forty years and featured 46 of the 70 living honorees. The Tampa Bay area was the perfect fit for the 2019 MOH convention of this magnitude and significance as it is the home of MacDill Air Force Base. A significant population of veterans live in the greater Tampa Bay area and the two supporting VA Hospitals, James A Haley and Bay Pines, are amongst the largest and busiest in the country. The convention comes on the heels of this year's successful Department of Defense (DOD) Warrior Games also held in Tampa.

The week of festivities was capped off with a star-studded black tie gala. Speakers at the event included award winning actor and veteran advocate, Gary Sinese of the Gary Sinese Foundation, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Dignitaries in attendance included representatives from President Donald J Trump's administration to include DIA and DOD representatives and many other military leaders. Awards were presented to retired Army Gen. Joe Votel, Ms. Catherine Herridge (FOX and CBS News), country music icon George Strait, and Bobby Newman of the JC Neman Cigar Company and co-founder of Southeastern Guide Dogs. David Ferrety, of professional golf fame and a prior recipient of the Army's Outstanding Civilian Service Award, was also in attendance.

Medal of Honor recipients and members of the Medal of Honor Society capped a full week of events to include town hall meetings at VA Hospitals, Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey, and school visits as the MOH recipients conducted Character Development Program teachings to hundreds of school children at over 20 schools. In addition to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the team at SAGICO has a demonstrated commitment to supporting multiple military oriented organizations. Included is Support Our Troops, dedicated to active duty service members deployed across the globe and Southeastern Guide Dogs, working to provide guide dogs to military service veterans.
