SAN DIEGO, Jan. 6, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- San Diego Virtual School (SDVS) now gives students valuable credit for time spent at their jobs. The new Work Education Experience class is a dynamic addition to the courses offered by the personalized distance learning institution serving middle and high school students in San Diego County.
Students can earn 5 elective credits through this class, which meets once a week virtually. Enrollment is open to students who are either 16 or older or in grades 11 or 12; special education students who may have work experience identified in an Individual Education Plan (IEP) are also eligible. Students must have permission to take the class, and they also have to work an average of 10 hours a week for a minimum of 18 weeks (180 total hours).
SDVS, the student, and the employer work together to coordinate an experience that prepares students for adult living, says Principal Diahann Mathis.
"Students in this class will learn necessary life skills," she says. "Subjects that will be covered include taxes, bank accounts, labor laws, job projections, resumes, and much more. San Diego Virtual School provides students with a safe, supportive environment for in-depth learning, and the Work Education Experience class is a wonderful complement to our academic courses as well as our Career and Technical Education Pathways program. Our course offerings all work together to help launch our students towards a successful future."
Established in 2010, SDVS's ongoing mission is to help students develop necessary academic and life skills. An online approach offers students more flexibility, opportunity, and a more positive learning environment than is typical in a traditional classroom. Experienced, specialized California-credentialed teachers lead online courses in six subject areas: English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, Social Science, and Health and Physical Education. These educators use several technological modalities to present lessons, including video, audio, screen sharing, and interactive tutorials. Students thrive with constant, live support from their teachers while studying an invigorating curriculum.
Traditionally serving military families, advanced learners, struggling students, student athletes or performers, health-related distance learners, and students with jobs, SDVS is available to any local student, age 18 years or younger. SDVS is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), approved by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and meets University of California's A-G course entrance requirements.
