Sandgarden acquires Layer, bringing on the team behind some of the most widely-installed AI developer tools of the past two years, to accelerate Doc Holiday — the AI-native platform that turns every software release into the communications, documentation, and updates that usually fall through the cracks.
NEW YORK, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Sandgarden, the company building Doc Holiday, the AI-native platform that keeps your entire organization in sync with every release, today announced the acquisition of Layer, a developer tools company known for its work in LLM extensibility and AI-native developer infrastructure. The Layer engineering team will join Sandgarden to accelerate development of Doc Holiday. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Layer built some of the most-installed AI developer tooling of the past two years, including MCP servers for enterprise clients including cal.com, Neon, and Clark Authentication, and VS Code extensions with tens of thousands of installs—among them an MCP extension for Mongo with over 24,000 installs. The team has deep experience building AI integrations at the infrastructure level, working directly with enterprise engineering and product organizations.
"Working with enterprise teams, you see pretty quickly that shipping software is the easy part. It's everything that happens after that's a mess," said Andrew Hamilton, co-founder of Layer. "Every team we worked with had some version of this problem and nobody had really taken a serious run at fixing it. When we saw what Doc Holiday was doing, it was kind of a 'why isn't everyone talking about this' moment. Joining felt obvious."
Doc Holiday automates the post-release communication work that typically falls through the cracks: synthesizing what changed, translating it for different audiences, and surfacing the right information to the right teams before it becomes a support ticket or a missed renewal. The product is currently in private beta, serving a select group of paying enterprise customers.
"Andrew, Jonah and the Layer team built tools that real companies paid for and integrated into their core workflows," said Elizabeth Zalman, CEO of Sandgarden. "That's the bar we hold ourselves to, and it's exactly the kind of experience we want on this team. Doc Holiday is at an inflection point, and this gives us the engineering depth to move faster."
"We're excited to see what the Layer team does at Sandgarden," said Mike Hirshland, Founder at Resolute Ventures. "Sandgarden solves a problem that anyone who has shipped software at scale will immediately recognize."
The acquisition expands the Sandgarden engineering team as the company prepares for broader availability of Doc Holiday later this year.
