Seaside Vacations Announces Another Successful Year Partnering with the Sonder Project
Inspired by the abundance of pantry items discarded at vacation rentals after a guest's departure - leftover items that guests didn't want to haul home - The Sonder Project developed an initiative known as Project: feed.
KITTY HAWK, N.C., Jan. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Sonder Project is a global non-profit organization that fights hunger around the world by focusing on sustainable food projects both domestically and internationally while educating communities on the importance of clean water and food security. The organization's projects include community gardens, village wells and community farms, and housing recovery, particularly for those impacted by Hurricane Michael. Through their efforts, The Sonder Project has been able to provide food security to over 1,600 individuals while providing access to clean water to over 13,000 people. In addition, the organization has helped to provide an adequate education for over 1,400 students worldwide.
Inspired by the abundance of pantry items discarded at vacation rentals after a guest's departure – leftover items that guests didn't want to haul home – The Sonder Project developed an initiative known as Project: feed. Seeing a great opportunity to give back to the local community through this project, Seaside Vacations, a property management company in the Outer Banks, NC, joined efforts with The Sonder Project in December 2015. As a collection partner, Seaside Vacations equips each of their rental homes with a Sonder Project bag creating an easy way for guests to donate their unopened and nonperishable food items at the end of their vacation to families in need. Each week, the bags are collected from the rental homes and the food is distributed to various food pantries across the Outer Banks.
The partnership, organized by Michelle Russell, Business Development Director with Seaside Vacations, was very successful in 2018 with a total of 1,208 pounds of food collected for local food pantries. Since joining Project: feed, Seaside Vacations has donated over 4,000 total pounds of food for the Dare County community. Copeland plans to continue partnering with The Sonder Project in 2019 and by making homeowners and guests more aware of the project, she hopes to top 2018's collection numbers.
