Secrets of Cinematic Storytelling Revealed in Short Documentary by Guildhawk
Don't bombard people with photos and text, excite them with a story. Immersive storytelling is a craft as old as civilization but is it possible to reinvent a technique from the dawn of cinema to convey a beautiful story in just 50 seconds? In a new mini documentary, Robin Guise of Lipsync Productions and Jurga Zilinskiene, CEO of Guildhawk, reveal the trade secrets behind rear projection, the benefits over green screen and the professional film production disciplines that you must use to make it effective.
LONDON, Oct. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Great cinematic storytelling touches the soul and has the power to transport us through time and space. But faced with a tsunami of on-demand, high-resolution digital media the craft and ability to evoke spirit is easily diluted.
A short documentary released today and available to watch here: https://www.guildhawk.com/news-insight/ explains how it is possible to turn back the clock and use traditional rear projection to convey a lasting message about making our world a better place; and how this was done in under a minute.
This was the challenge that Robin Guise, the director of London film production company Lipsync https://www.lipsyncpost.co.uk/editing/, took on when Guildhawk approached him – to make a 50-second epic about the power of unity in helping us tackle the complexities of our world.
"We wanted to tell a story about how daunting the world can be when you're alone", says Jurga. "The story is about overcoming challenges together, adventure, building a better world, and the key role that languages and culture play in all this", she adds.
Jurga's vision for the story was to show the beauty of our world through the eyes of two young children. Describing the script, Robin explains, "The film depicts a world where linguists work and shows the journey that two children could take in their present and future lives".
Bringing the children, and therefore the viewer, into the heart of industries that are awe inspiring – the places where Guildhawk people live – called for cinematic effect. To do this, rear projection was chosen over green screen technology. "Rear projection is a very old technology that's been around since the early days of cinema and it has its challenges", notes Robin.
In the documentary, Robin explains the benefits of the technology and how professional producers and directors must take account of every eventuality even making provision for a children's toy Panda to fly through the air and create an authentic breeze indoors. There are also tips on using temperatures and intensities to reinforce sentiment.
What would the pioneers of the first flicks, like Charlie Chaplin and Alice Guy-Blaché say if they could see their techniques in action once again? "They would give an an approving smile", says Jurga adding, "In the silent movie era, Chaplin knew you could build a powerful fan base of all ages and all languages using stories that inspire feelings of joy, love and sadness. If you want to engage with a global audience, don't bombard them with data, immerse them in a heartwarming story".
Having worked with many great clients on content for film, radio and theater for almost 20 years, the Guildhawk team is thrilled to have produced their own epic, especially one which is so evocative of our very purpose – to work together as one and unite people through language.
