RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes have been recently in the news, due to the emergence of recent severe lung injury linked to the products. E-cigarettes are battery operated devices that deliver inhaled aerosolized substances; this is also known as "vaping". Case reports have detailed severe lung injury in previously healthy adolescents and adults and are linked to inhaled substances including cannabis and tobacco delivered via e-cigarette.
Symptoms have included breathing symptoms like shortness of breath, cough, chest pain but also nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and fever. Symptoms may develop over days to weeks and do not involve infection. Over 800 cases have been reported among 46 state health departments. This disorder is not linked to a single product; reports have been linked to a variety of distinct products. Many patients have required intensive care, mechanical ventilation with 12 deaths reported across 10 states. The CDC recommends e-cigarette users refrain from using e-cigarettes or vaping products, particularly those containing THC.
