CHICAGO, June 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, one in three families struggled to provide clean diapers for their children, according to the National Diaper Bank. Pandemic-related pay-cuts and layoffs have only exacerbated this challenge. In an effort to have an immediate impact on this critical need, Chicago-based nonprofit Share Our Spare launched the Summer Diaper Challenge, "Do Your Duty," with the goal of raising 100,000 diapers by July 20. They are enlisting the support of local Ambassadors to help them meet this time-sensitive goal.
Alex Goodfellow, Share Our Spare's Executive Director, hopes the Summer Diaper Challenge will help bring broader attention and support to the issue. "We are super excited about the potential impact that this challenge will have," Goodfellow said. "By enlisting the help of local community members, we will make a tremendous difference in the lives of so many more families."
With an emphasis on community involvement, Share Our Spare has made it easy for people to participate.
- Summer Diaper Challenge Ambassador Program: Share Our Spare encourages families, corporations or community organizations to host a local diaper drive in their neighborhood to contribute to the 100,000 diaper goal.
- Donations: Share Our Spare welcomes both physical diapers and monetary donations to support the purchase of new diapers.
Since March, Share Our Spare has been collecting, donating and distributing hundreds of thousands of extra diapers in attempts to meet the Chicago community's growing demand. Share our Spare typically collects and distributes all the essentials needed for the first five years of life. With the onset of COVID-19, the nonprofit has focused primarily on diapers. The organization has distributed over 550,000 diapers this year so far, which already surpasses its 2019 total.
