“How do you attract people who want to be healthy and disciplined to join my global Health Olympics?”
That is the question talk radio host Sharon Kleyne recently asked special guest Australian Tony Phillips on her nationally syndicated radio program, The Sharon Kleyne Hour Water Life Science®/Nature’s Pharma®, The Power of Water® & Your Health sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist® and Nature’s Mist® Face of the Water® on VoiceAmerica.
Phillips, the Director of Media Connections and Creative Ideas based in Melbourne, Australia and the legendary former CMO of News Corp, who was once an eager exchange student in the U.S., is one of the most famous and respected marketers in the world. Phillips has held senior positions with some of Australia’s top brands and has orchestrated many of the most effective advertising campaigns of recent years in Australia. Perhaps more than any other marketer, Phillips has brought the Up Top to the Down Under.
Phillips had much to say in response to Kleyne’s query. “You have to encourage people and provide information,” said Phillips. “You must offer people small-step goals and individual plans. Give people achievable goals. Convince people it is their idea, that it’s something they want to do. You can’t preach to people because that will turn them off. Don’t preach—engage.”
“It’s a promotion. It’s always a promotion,” said Kleyne, also the founder and director of research at Bio Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® in Oregon. “How can we get people excited about the Health Olympics and excited to be a vain person? Vain people value their lives if you educate them, if you show them how the Health Olympics teaches them to discipline themselves for better health.”
“It’s always desirable to turn a negative into a positive,” Phillips cautioned. “Instead of vanity, how about using the term personal pride? You can’t tell people what to do. You don’t want to make them feel guilty. Education about the Health Olympics must be fun and entertaining.”
Citing the massive growth platform, Instagram, Phillips stressed the importance of learning to make use of a fragmented media. Phillips encourages motivating through encouragement, building appropriate channels and gathering partners. Celebrity endorsements and friends talking to friends create peer influence. Tapping into a major retailer would also grow the Sharon Kleyne Health Olympics brand.
