Houston Medical Practice Expands Its Clinical Team with Enhanced Links to Stanford University Sleep Disorders Program
Houston, TX (PRWEB) December 11, 2013 -- A well-established Houston-based sleep disorders program, Comprehensive Sleep Medicine Associates (CSMA), announces the addition of neurologist Gerard J. Meskill, MD to their clinical team. Dr. Meskill joins CSMA after completing his fellowship training in sleep medicine at Stanford University which is known to be the leading program in the nation. The founding-director of CSMA, Jerald H. Simmons, MD also obtained his fellowship training in sleep medicine at Stanford University in 1991 and moved to the Houston area after a working for six-years at UCLA, where he co-directed the sleep disorders program there.
The Stanford University Sleep Research Center, the first center of its kind, was established in 1970 by William C. Dement, MD. Due to the major efforts of researchers and donors, it has continued to be the leading sleep research center in the world. “It was important for me to bring on a sleep physician who has a similar perspective to my own. Not all approaches to sleep problems are the same, and many centers do not incorporate some of the more subtle features of sleep testing into their evaluation. Dr. Meskill is highly-trained and with his Stanford sleep training he brings a breath-of-fresh air to CSMA by understanding our approach. I would have had to train others to bring them up to speed if he had not been given this insight during his Stanford training,” Dr. Simmons states.
Understanding the value of his Stanford experience, Dr. Meskilll made a concerted effort to find a colleague with similar schooling. “When I made the decision to move to Houston from Northern California, I began researching the sleep practitioners in the area. Dr. Simmons’s background and his perspective on sleep medicine made his practice a natural match for me. My mentors at Stanford know him well, and they recommended highly that I consider joining his practice.”
The current faculty at Stanford are excited that Dr. Meskill joins Dr. Simmons’s practice, in fact, Emmanuel Mignot, MD, Director of the Center for Narcolepsy and Director of the Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine at Stanford University, states, “It is a pleasure to see how physicians, such as Dr. Simmons, who finished our sleep program many years ago and went on to establish a highly acclaimed sleep practice, are able to hire new graduates from Stanford, such as Dr. Meskill."
Reconnecting to Dr. Simmons's alma mater may create new alliances for CSMA and Stanford University. “I am hoping to strengthen my continued link with the Stanford program and hopefully include them on some of our research projects, which are otherwise difficult to complete outside of an academic setting,” emphasized Dr. Simmons.
