SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Many people have been spending more time at home lately, and it turns out they're not alone. Households across the United States have seen dramatic rises in household pests, including insects, rats, and other rodents.
Smith's Pest Management, a team of pest control specialists based in San Jose, CA, surveyed 3,160 households across the nation to gain insight into recent rises in pest activity levels. According to the survey results, 1 out of 4 households have experienced a surge in pests since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. Broken down across the country, the survey shows that homes in New Hampshire and South Dakota have seen the most significant increase in pandemic pest activity, with half (50%) of respondents saying this was the case.
Additional findings from the survey include:
- 1 in 3 households has seen an increase in household garbage production since lockdown began.
- Over 25% admit they have been cleaning their home less thoroughly, despite spending more time there.
- About 1 in 10 households have noticed increasing food waste during the pandemic.
- 75% of people say they would file a complaint if they noticed increasing numbers of rodents coming from their neighbor's property.
According to Zachary Smith, President of Smith's Pest Management, improving cleaning practices is one of the best ways to keep pests out: "Although it can be challenging to keep things clean and tidy while spending extended periods indoors, it is now more important than ever to maintain good hygiene standards in your home, especially if you have young children. If you have stored food products, make sure you keep the storage area clean and sanitized to prevent pest contamination. Additionally, ensure you clean up spills immediately and make sure to stay up to date with the trash removal schedule, so you don't have an overflow on your hands."
While pandemic pests are just another problem of 2020, good household hygiene can discourage them from entering the home.
