Soil, Mud, Vessels and Innovation: DEME to Serve as the Data Sponsor for the Innovation Hackathon at OSIsoft's PI World Conference in Barcelona
DEME, one of the world's leaders in port technology, and OSIsoft want to see your ideas for Big Data on the high seas.
SAN LEANDRO, Calif., Sept. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- OSIsoft LLC, a leader in operational intelligence, is proud to announce that DEME will serve as the data sponsor for the Innovation Hackathon at PI World in Barcelona taking place September 24-27, 2018.
At the Innovation Hackathon, teams of programmers, data scientists business analysts and others will compete to develop applications that sit on top of OSIsoft's PI System to solve critical marine engineering problems over a 23-hour period. As data sponsor, DEME will provide a sanitized data feed distilled from its own operations for contestants to create, train and test their applications.
The theme of the Hackathon-- Soil, Mud, Sensors and Vessels—reflects DEME's expertise. For over 140 years DEME has been a global leader in dredging, environmental remediation and complex marine engineering and participated in projects such as helping build artificial islands in Abu Dhabi, expanding port facilities in Asia and reducing coastal erosion in Benin. Belgium-based DEME employs approximately 5,000 and reported revenue of 2.37 billion Euros in 2017.
DEME has been an OSIsoft customer and PI System user since 2010.
"One of the major challenges we had with our company data before we were working with OSIsoft was gathering all of the data so that we could gain insights," said Kristof de Mey, IT business partner of DEME. "The importance of the PI System will probably increase in our company since we are working on advanced like machine learning, Big Data and advanced analytics."
"We're extremely proud to have DEME as a customer and a sponsor. The company has been at the forefront of marine engineering for decades," said Gregor Beck, Senior Development Support Engineer at OSIsoft. "Using PI System components, OSIsoft developer technologies, and any other tools you may want to bring, come prepared think outside the box to show what the PI System can do at the shoreline or on the high seas."
A Brief History of the Hackathon
The hackathon is regularly one of the highlight of PI World, the company's biannual conference for customers, partners and developers. The hackathon encourages teams to create new and potentially commercially viable applications that leverage the power of the PI System under the dread of a deadline. Technological and engineering expertise is not a requirement: PI Vision and other OSIsoft products are designed to be used by a wide variety of people.
Previous hackathon participants have created applications for tracking luggage in real-time at a large international airport and generating alarms about potholes and truck traffic at remote mining operations to improve safety.
The hackathon starts Monday, September 24 at 9:00 a.m. in Ballroom BC of the Hilton Hotel Barcelona and concludes on Tuesday at 8 a.m. For updates and more information on rules, prizes and requirements, please visit PI DevClub Forums and @PIDevClub or contact us at pidevclub(at)osisoft.com.
