SPAAN TECH President and CEO Smita Shah Named One of Crain's Chicago Business' Notable Women in Construction and Design 2020

Longtime civic leader and entrepreneur among 49 women recognized for their work

SPAAN Tech, Inc., an award-winning, Chicago-based global engineering and construction management firm, is proud to announce that its President and CEO, Smita N. Shah, has been recognized as one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ Notable Women in Construction and Design.

“For the past two decades SPAAN Tech has taken great care in delivering high quality and innovative approaches to every project we have led or assisted. It is my hope that 20 years from now, I will look back on our work here with the same level of pride and admiration that I have for my team today,” said Shah. “This recognition is an incredible honor and I am thrilled to be in the company of so many amazing women who are trailblazers in this field.”

Shah founded SPAAN Tech. in 1998 and has served as its President and CEO since that time. Among her many accomplishments, Crain’s noted her leadership in the recent completion of 12 miles of U.S. Route 41 and the firm’s collaboration with a Portuguese company to engineer automatic toll payment machines around the Chicagoland area. Shah was also commended for her role on a team of negotiators for a mixed-fuel power project in India as well as the firm’s numerous projects for O’Hare International Airport where they recently worked on the completion of Runway 9L-27R and the O’Hare Airport Optic Fibers installations. SPAAN Tech also led the work for the Parking Access and Revenue Control Technology (PARCT) serving six parking lots and a total of 25,000 spaces, and the electrical and mechanical design for the equipment installation of two FAA buildings - the SPA combination storage and maintenance facility and Hazmat storage facility for hazardous and corrosive materials for O’Hare.

SPAAN Tech’s portfolio over the years also includes work that spans across public and privately funded projects, including the professional construction engineering services for the Kedzie Avenue Bridges over Marquette Park Lagoon, the construction of the new Hospital Pavilion at the University of Chicago Medical Center, the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) functions for the construction management team for the Chicago Transportation Authority’s Blue Line Reconstruction, and others.

Shah is a graduate of Northwestern University, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Saïd Business Schools at Oxford University. She is involved in numerous philanthropic and community organizations, including serving as: vice chair of the Chicago Plan Commission; trustee of the Museum of Science & Industry; traveling member of the MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering Committee; trustee at Ann and Robert H. Lurie’s Children’s Hospital; board member of After School Matters; Chair of the Delhi Chicago Sister Cities Committee; and others. She has been recognized as one of Crain’s Chicago Business’ 40 under 40, named the Young Civil Engineer of the Year by American Society of Civil Engineers, an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, and recipient of the Entrepreneur Award of the Year from YWCA.
