“Built to withstand even the toughest use, the solid inner core wrapped in Soft-Touch™ provides a firm yet comfortable platform for optimal functionality and durability.”

Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has recently joined into a distribution partnership with Bergeron Health Care to offer their Special Tomato® Pediatric Adapted Equipment to a more comprehensive consumer marketplace. Headquartered in Dolgeville, New York, Bergeron Health Care was created by Tim Bergeron, an industrial designer and father to a special needs child. When his daughter, Carrie, was born with Down syndrome in 1976, medical support and information for this disorder was rather sparse. As Tim was in the midst of developing a company that developed products for children with special needs when Carrie was born, he used that momentum to create the equipment that his daughter needed, but could not find. This company was called Tumble Forms®, manufacturing vibrantly colored and durable adaptive seating and positioning devices, including a seat named just for Tim’s daughter, the famous Carrie® Seat.
As business with his Tumble Forms® progressed, Tim started to realize that the outer shell of these products could be softer and more comfortable for their young users. He stepped away from the Tumble Forms® company in 1988 and invented the innovative Soft-Touch™ material for constructing the pediatric adapted equipment from instead. Much better suited for therapy, or for sitting for long periods of time, this latex-free and peel- and tear-resistant material is impervious to liquids and features built-in antimicrobial protection. Unlike a traditional plastic skin, this smooth, outer skin is soft to the touch, while the inner portion is molded and squeezable foam. Young users’ skin will not stick to the seats, and the Soft-Touch™ technology provides more comfort and varying degrees of support dependent upon the particular product used. The Special Tomato® equipment is specifically intended for young users with mild to moderate positioning requirements.
Carrie herself beautifully explains how her dad got the name for this new company’s products. “One day it was bothering me that I was having a hard time doing my school work,” Carrie said. “I told my dad about this problem and he shared a story about when he was out in his garden picking tomatoes the year I was born. Every year my dad grows a garden and loves to plant tomatoes. At harvest time there were Beefsteak tomatoes on a bush. When he saw a differently shaped tomato it got his attention. It had a large, smooth, bright red enlarged side that made my dad want to pick it up and study the bump because it was so unique and looked appetizing. At supper, that tomato was just as juicy as the others.”
Carrie continued, “Even though I’m different like the tomato as a person with Down syndrome, my family and friends love me even more and want to help me when I need it. My dad tells me that even though I have more difficulty learning than my brother and sisters, my lovable and outgoing personality and strong character make me just as special as they are. I guess I am the ‘special tomato’ on our family’s bush!”
