DHS Recognizes SpectraRep With 2016 Under Secretary's Award
Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) August 08, 2016 -- SpectraRep. LLC., a leading provider of communications solutions for public safety, announced today that the company received a 2016 Under Secretary's Award from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate.
The award was presented at a Ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on July 26 and recognizes the datacasting work SpectraRep has been undertaking in partnership with the DHS First Responder Group (FRG), Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab (JHU/APL)), the Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) and a number of public television stations around the country.
"It's a tremendous privilege to be recognized by DHS for our efforts to improve emergency communications," said Mark O'Brien, president, SpectraRep. "It's critical we continue to develop and refine solutions that provide our men and women working to keep us safe with the data and information they need to respond to any situation. In partnership with public television, our datacasting technology is a reliable, efficient tool to accomplish this important mission."
Datacasting leverages the existing resilient public television infrastructure and licensed spectrum to reliably deliver encrypted and targetable communications to individual or groups of public safety users. Video, large files, alerts and other content that might congest other networks can be delivered securely to an unlimited number of recipients by leveraging broadcast television’s native one-to-many broadcast model.
SpectraRep’s datacasting technology is being used operationally and has been showcased in several successful pilots, including ones in Houston, Chicago and D.C. where datacasting technology delivered real-time video and data over broadcast spectrum to local police and fire officials.
“Datacasting made it possible in less than an hour to stream live video from a helicopter that did not have that capability, into the EOC and then into a conference room that was without a video workstation or any other connection capability. This software is giving us the ability to accommodate needs and fill capability gaps in ways we never thought possible,” Jack Hanagriff, City of Houston, Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.
In addition to enabling existing high powered broadcast television signals to carry encrypted public safety data, SpectraRep developed an extensive toolset of content management, targeting, backhaul, video management system integration and receiver technology that focus on ease of use. Recent developments include LTE integration for cell phone video and other ad hoc sources.
SpectraRep will be speaking at the annual APCO International Conference for public safety communications officers in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday, August 17 at 1:40pm. Its presentation is titled, “Digital Television Datacasting for Encrypted Video and Data Sharing Nationwide.” O’Brien will present with Robert Desourdis, a Vice President for Solution Architecture in SAIC.
