Elizabeth Eskow Bortz, M.S., CCC-SLP shares the first in a series of books that provide a therapeutic journey to help families with communication, emotional expression, and establishing trust
RIVA, Md., March 27, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Author Elizabeth Eskow Bortz M.S.,CCC-SLP has written a series of books for children and adults that focus on teaching easy-to-use sensory strategies and calming techniques to help create communication opportunities in a natural way.
The first book in the series, "Abby the Alligator Needs Hand Squeezes," Abby has a sensory processing disorder and her hands are constantly needing "input," meaning she touches many things and is a sensory seeker. Abby's parents and friends help her body feel calm by using a hand squeezing strategy demonstrated in the book.
"Many families and teams can feel overwhelmed, trying to figure out how to help a child feel better," said Eskow Bortz. "This becomes especially challenging when the individual is on sensory overload or is feeling panicked. Equipping teams to use these strategies, while fostering language skills, has been a blessing and I want the whole world to learn these tips that can have a big impact."
Each of these stories uses simple language to help foster literacy skills in young readers, and key words are bolded in the text to help families focus in on them to teach those concepts. The tips and helpful suggestions detailed throughout are utilized with clients on a daily basis by Eskow Bortz, a Speech Language Pathologist and AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) Consultant.
"The incidence of autism and sensory processing disorders keeps increasing, yet most families and school teams are still struggling to find strategies to help," said Eskow Bortz. "Many children end up feeling dysregulated which limits their ability to learn, hinders their ability to navigate situations, and can lead to negative social interactions. Addressing sensory needs should be a top priority of everyone supporting children with disabilities, because if a child's body isn't calm, they won't be ready to learn."
