DURHAM, N.C., Dec. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Spoonflower, the world's largest custom fabric, wallpaper and home decor digital marketplace announced David Laboy as its Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Sustainability (DEIS). The hire comes on the heels of Spoonflower's unprecedented growth, both in business and its community. Laboy comes to Spoonflower after a nearly 19-year tenure with Blue Cross NC where he recently served as the company's Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
"We conducted a thorough and comprehensive search for this critically important Spoonflower role, and David is, without question, the most qualified candidate we could have hoped to lead our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Sustainability strategy," said Michael Jones, Spoonflower's Chief Executive Officer. "David's credentials speak for themselves, but his diversity, equity and inclusion intangibles - not the least of which is his passion for building community relationships and his end-to-end experience - are equally impressive."
Spoonflower is a leading eCommerce enabler that connects and empowers a community of artists, makers and consumers throughout the creative economy. This community is crucial to Spoonflower's success, and Laboy will be responsible for ensuring the company continues to create an inclusive environment by which its members can thrive.
Laboy's auspicious career path began with a degree in Human Resources, a Masters degree in Health Administration, and is currently pursuing a Master Studies in Law program, focused in Human Resources. He launched the bilingual customer service unit at Blue Cross NC, and co-led its Hispanic sales, marketing and communications strategy.
"I am beyond excited to join the Spoonflower family. For me, one of the biggest draws to Spoonflower is the team's passion to build a diverse and inclusive community that is creative and innovative. Additionally, Spoonflower not only clearly and openly articulates where it stands in the racial equity space, but also walks the talk as it relates to being a good, value-supporting corporate citizen," said Laboy. "My goal is to execute a collaborative and integrated strategy that will leverage the power of our collective diversity to maintain a work environment where everyone is empowered to contribute their individual identity to Spoonflower's success. Spoonflower is poised to authentically claim a top spot as a nimble company that is authentically and creatively in tune with its customer base and community, which by extension qualifies it as a best-in-class workplace."
While at Blue Cross NC, Laboy developed award-winning training solutions, tools and resources to socialize diversity and inclusion learning. He also enhanced work-life offerings by introducing self-serve care options to meet the needs of employees in different stages of life. Laboy was also recognized by Triangle Business Journal as one of the 2015 Leaders in Diversity.
Laboy joins Spoonflower as the company has reinforced its commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainability. This year, the company has partnered with a variety of organizations including the Social Justice Sewing Academy, Sew It/Sell It and Raleigh City Farm's Harvest Dinner to support local black farmers. Spoonflower's Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Sustainability addition is one of over one hundred new hires executed in 2020.
