Starbucks Wi-Fi Ugrade Signals New Trend
(PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- Starbucks and Google will be spending the next year and a half upgrading wi-fi networks in 7,000 of the Seattle-based company's coffee houses. Google has promised that the speeds will be ten times faster than Starbucks' existing wi-fi – an increase that technologist Chris Watson of Everspark Interactive says could become the norm for all wi-fi connections.
The upgrade will affect all of the company-operated Starbucks location in the United States, according to CNN (07.31.2013). Google won the contract over rival AT&T, which has provided Starbucks' wi-fi services since 2008.
"The speeds that Google has promised will make a noticeable difference for users," said Watson, who founded Atlanta-based Everspark and helped build it into an internet marketing and SEO leader. "Pages will load faster and streaming video or music will be easier."
However, Watson says that the speeds that are impressive today will be far less revolutionary in late 2014, when the upgrade is complete.
"Telecom companies are always, always vying for more speed," Watson said. "While 10 times faster sounds like a lot, Google is promising speeds 100 times faster to its fiber optic customers."
And Watson says that the technology to deliver these higher speeds is not unique to Google.
"When AT&T lost the contract, they stated that they too had promised to make speeds 10 times faster," Watson said. "It may sound like a lot, but it's a connection speed that has already been realized at tech firms."
Whether revolutionary or not, Watson believes that the increase in connection speeds will be a boon to consumers.
"Think of everything that was impossible in 2005, that's commonplace with today's speeds," Watson said. "Faster speeds enable applications that can't even be imagined today."
