People need to realise the PCW they used previously may not be the place to find that perfect match now, especially if they have a pre-existing condition. You need to look at niche providers to find your perfect travel policy.

In the wake of reports some consumers feel they are getting ripped off by travel insurance, insurance tech specialist Aquarium Software says the key to getting around this problem is matching people up with the perfect policy provider for their unique circumstances; revolutionary apps are making this process easier than ever. Aquarium’s advice comes as those with pre-existing medical conditions, from blood pressure to cancer, can feel that sourcing affordable cover is impossible. Technology makes it easier to source travel insurance, but the industry’s challenge is to make it easy for consumers with unique needs to secure the right cover.

There is the perfect match out there and Aquarium’s advice is to change tactics. Instead of defaulting to Price Comparison Websites (PCWs), search for pre-existing medical condition specialists. Tech is allowing more insurers to quote competitively for pre-existing conditions, by allowing more accurate assessment of individual risk, rather than lumping all together. Seeking specific cover can cost less than traditional providers and can carry additional, unexpected benefits.

“Seeking travel insurance with a pre-existing medical condition can be like online dating after a divorce,” said Aquarium Software Director, Mark Colonnese. “A bewildering and overwhelming number of sites, yet it feels like there is no one out there for you. People need to realise the PCW they used previously may not be the place to find that perfect match now, especially if they have a pre-existing condition. You need to look at niche providers to find your perfect travel policy,” added Mark.

“Niche polices can cost more but this can be a blessing in disguise,” added Colonnese. “Too many travellers go for the cheapest option, when a bespoke policy is more likely to include those options we should all have as standard. An annual European policy for a family of three, including an adult on DVT medication, for example, can cost as little as £70. Hardly a fortune, when the average family holiday costs £4,792. Some cancer patients might represent less risk than someone with high blood pressure – it is horses for courses. In the past, it was not possible to make such fine distinctions, but thanks to the latest technology, fairer policies are a reality for honest consumers willing to selectively shop around,” concluded Mark.
