Lee Putman, a Stratus master franchisee servicing central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, Bloomington and surrounding areas, has overseen one of the franchise's fastest-growing territories. Putman says that success is due to his talented staff, and in particular, the work of Account Sales Representative Matt Nikirk, who had limited formal sales experience prior to joining Stratus.
"I'm a big believer that it's not necessarily the background that matters," Putman said of hiring Nikirk in September 2018. "I wanted somebody who had potential to grow, and that's definitely Matt. I'm really looking for someone with skills and talents that fit."
Putman knew of those skills after connecting with Nikirk at a country club where Nikirk worked. One of a variety of jobs, from working at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis to training and working as a PGA golf pro, Nikirk's experiences offered a chance to interact with people, which he says has been invaluable to making connections — both with Putman and now with Stratus clients.
"I've certainly gained a lot of skills," said Nikirk of his path to Stratus. "All of my jobs have been very people-oriented. I've never wanted a desk job, and though this has a little of that, becoming a part of this company makes me feel very fortunate and lucky to be in this position. I didn't have direct sales experience, but the only reason I'm half as good as I am is that I've had Lee to work with."
Putman, also a minority owner in the Grand Rapids and Louisville territories, says his hiring experience shows how Stratus Building Solutions offers opportunity for people of all backgrounds and career paths. He believes the talent Stratus can bring in helps to provide better service than other companies competing for a small slice of market share.
