A new strategy guide from Softcat navigates businesses through developing a plan and prioritising actions in order to secure the supply chain

In the new guide from IT solutions and services provider, Softcat, in-house cyber security experts explain what it takes to enhance cyber security in collaboration with suppliers, customers and everyone in between, to ensure safety along the supply chain.

Among the industry experts, GRC Consultant Sean Huggett explains that while data sharing in today’s day and age is highly convenient and essential, it is vital to protect the vulnerable areas of the supply chain where cyber attacks within companies tend to occur.

“Businesses should regularly ask themselves questions like: ‘Where’s my risk?’ and ‘Am I going to invalidate my insurance by missing something?’” he cautions. Conducting a cyber security audit is his top recommendation: “Understand who has access to your data no matter how big or small, no matter how regular or sporadic, and then prioritise them accordingly”.

Huggett also recommends a cyber threat analysis in order to find a business’s weak link and emphasises why it’s crucial to add a minimum baseline in contract agreements to improve information and computer security, and reduce common cyber threats.

This advice forms part of Softcat’s comprehensive approach to cyber security management, which covers the following key areas:

  • Prioritising cyber security actions – it isn’t easy to achieve it all at once, so it’s best to define and focus on what’s most important to a business
  • Developing a tangible plan – after outlining where efforts should be focused, a structure is required in order to make progress
  • Securing the supply chain – cyber monitoring to identify every customer and supplier in the chain, and working together to tighten up data sharing
