Stryker Hip Lawsuit News: Stryker Recall Could Cost More Than $1 Billion, Notes Rottenstein Law Group LLP
(PRWEB) October 24, 2013 -- Stryker says its recall of its ABG II and Rejuvenate hip implants could cost between $700 million and more than $1 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Rottenstein Law Group LLP discusses the impact of this estimate on those who have filed or are looking to file a Stryker hip replacement lawsuit.
The company said the ultimate cost would depend on a number of factors, including the value of Stryker settlements and lawsuits, according to an Oct. 23 WSJ article.*
“Based on my review of the announcement, it seems the company is taking into account the possibility for settling all of the Stryker hip lawsuits, while also considering that several of these lawsuits could go to trial and result in large damages awards,” said Rochelle Rottenstein, principal of the Rottenstein Law Group LLP.
There are more than 300 lawsuits pending in a consolidation of federal cases in Minnesota, according to court documents (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation; MDL-2441, U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota). There are currently about 600 lawsuits pending in state court in New Jersey, according to court documents (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Stem and the ABG II Modular Hip Stem Litigation; MCL-296, Bergen County Superior Court, New Jersey).
Metal poisoning, AKA “metallosis,” is among the most frequently alleged side effects of metal-on-metal hip implants such as the Stryker ABG II and Rejuvenate, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.** The symptoms occur when metal debris from the friction among the implant’s metal components sheds into and accumulates in a patient’s bloodstream. This, according to the FDA, can lead to neurological issues.
