Study.com Launches Civic Scholars, a Tuition-Free College Program for City Employees
Perris, Calif. is the first city to implement this innovative degree pathway for its employees
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Study.com has launched the Civic Scholars program, which gives employees of city governments and civic organizations the opportunity to earn a no-cost bachelor's degree in a flexible format that makes it easier for them to fit studying into their busy lives.
The City of Perris is the first municipality to introduce Civic Scholars and give their employees the opportunity to earn a college degree at no cost. Participants complete the majority of course requirements online through Study.com, which offers more than 150 courses recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education (ACE). Credits then transfer to Thomas Edison State University (TESU), an accredited public university, where students complete final requirements and earn their bachelor's degree.
Study.com courses are divided into short, 5-minute video lessons and assessments that can be accessed via computer, mobile phone or tablet. The online format offers convenient, flexible learning for working adults. Participants also have access to a success coach, who help map out their degree plan and provide motivational support throughout the program.
"In today's knowledge economy, a bachelor's degree is the key to career advancement but is often unattainable for working adults due to barriers like cost, convenience and confidence," said Adrian Ridner, CEO and Co-founder of Study.com. "With Civic Scholars' convenient, online education pathway, city employees can juggle learning with work and family life and they have the support of Study.com success coaches to guide them through the program. Earning a degree and reaching new levels in their career no longer has to be out of reach."
Study.com's innovative technology not only increases flexibility, but also reduces the cost of the degree so the entire bachelor's degree can usually be covered by existing tuition reimbursement benefits. No additional funding is typically needed to launch Civic Scholars. The program also acts as an employee attraction and retention tool for participating cities.
"Civic Scholars is a great opportunity for us to retain and improve our already stellar workforce and attract new talent," said City of Perris Councilmember, Tonya Burke. "Our employees who are participating in Civic Scholars are elated and so grateful to the city for implementing this program to give them a chance to not only improve their own lives, but their families' lives as they achieve their dream of earning a degree. The program is a win-win for us because a happy, productive and well-educated workforce can better serve the entire community."
Numerous cities in the Bay Area and southern California are already evaluating the program. On Thursday, September 27, Study.com and the City of Perris will be holding an info session in Perris, Calif. to give other California cities a chance to learn more about how this innovative educational opportunity can benefit their employees.
